In honor of World Health Day, we invite you to explore a few ways you can be healthier when you travel in 2015.
One of the best ways to experience the unique aspects of a destination is by enjoying the cuisine of the area. Food is a gateway into the cultures around the world. Spices, ingredients and styles of cooking all offer a window into those who make a culture different from others. What better way to enjoy the unique charm of a culture than eating with the locals? While this is a great way to enjoy a culture, there are things every traveler needs to keep in mind before your next meal. Tourico Vacations invites you to take a look at 5 tips you should consider to stay healthier when you eat while you are traveling.
Watch what you drink
In many countries, standards for water quality are much different than most of us in the U.S. are used too. Don’t risk it. Many illnesses relate directly to the water supply. If given the choice, always go for bottled water (make sure it is sealed). Don’t get ice, its probably made from tap water and if you must drink water that is not bottled, boil it first.
Avoid raw foods including fruits and veggies in some areas
Many times these foods have not been washed and if they have, have been washed in tap water introducing even more bacteria. Avoid all raw foods unless unpeeled and you can wash them yourself.
Be cautious when choosing street vendors
Street vendors can be found in countries around the world. In the U.S. however, these vendors must abide by strict guidelines for your safety. Such guidelines are not generally found in all countries. Foods that are not kept at strict temperatures may quickly become tainted. If you choose to eat from a street vendor, be cautious.
Avoid unpasteurized dairy products
Pasteurization is a process used to remove any harmful bacteria found in dairy products. While all dairy sold legally in the U.S. must be pasteurized, this is something also not true for all other countries you may visit. If you are unsure, ask. If it is not pasteurized, pass.
Keep clean
Not only are germs and bacteria spread by food, they may also be introduced by your own hands. Before you eat, be sure you wash your hands thoroughly especially after handling raw food or animals.
You can enjoy eating local delicacies when you travel and still stay safe just by paying attention. This year, do your part to stay safe when you eat.
