Discover the Vancouver Island You Only Thought You Knew – Canada is a playground for discerning travelers regardless of the season, but when the smell of earth begins to fill the air – spring has sprung. There’s no better time than the height of the spring season to discover Vancouver Island the way nature intended.
As the snow melts away and trees begin to bloom, the bears come out of their months-long hibernation, and the whales begin migrating north. Restaurants are brimming with in-season seafood, such as salmon and halibut. And if hiking’s your thing, the 1st of May marks the beginning of the season to check out the West Coast Trail.
Vancouver’s capital, Victoria, is located on the island, as well as a town that surfers will fall in love with – Tofino. 2020 marks the beginning of more ways to discover this island just begging for its 12,000-square-miles to be explored. On Vancouver Island, you can try your legs at surfing, take on the rapids kayaking, or instead relax amidst the burgeoning culinary scene. Tofino’s Distillery and Bravocados, a vegan diner, are must-stops, and the Pacific Sands has brand new suites.
But for true hospitality, Vancouver Island’s reigning queen is the Wickaninnish Inn. Their recent renovations added a refurbished Pointe Restaurant and chic On the Rocks Club for your cocktail enthusiasm. The club is constructed entirely of wood with large, open windows that face the ocean and a bar made out of locally sourced marble. March of 2020 marks the annual fundraiser for the Surfrider Foundation. In conjunction, a multiuse trail stretching from Tofino to Ucluelet – nearly 15 miles – is in the works. Ucluelet also offers cycling tours through eco-friendly tour group, Pacific Rim Eco Tours.
Vancouver Island is also the home of 50 First Nations. These communities offer several ways for visitors to immerse themselves in local culture and learn the indigenous traditions and ways of life. The cultural tour group, Homalco Wildlife Tours, hosts tours along the north coast of Vancouver Island to demonstrate the culture of the Homalco people.
