Milan – Italy’s Everything Hub – Milan is the second-largest city in Italy and the capital of the Lombardy province. Just an hour north is Switzerland. It’s the perfect place to discover what a getaway really should be.
The metropolitan area is spread out amongst a large valley bordered by the Ticino and the Po Rivers. You’re never far from a body of water, and the Alps are always in the distance. Milan is known for its fashion and design, its shopping opportunities, its arts – both culinary and otherwise – and, of course, its entertainment. But the very heartbeat of Milan is the Duomo. This majestic cathedral took over six hundred years to build.
For hundreds of years, it was forbidden for any building to be taller than the Duomo. There are buildings taller than it today, but they’re set farther away so as not to diminish the meaning of the historic cathedral.
If being here, near the center of the city, is important to you, consider the eclectic boutique accommodations of Maison Milano. It’s just a block away from the Duomo.
When you arrive in Malpensa, you’ll be tempted to hop the train to Milan – but locals recommend hiring a taxi service to pick you up from the airport. After flying overnight, you’ll appreciate the comforts of a spacious car – it takes an hour to get to Milan from Malpensa.
When you arrive at the Maison, their friendly staff will greet you, offer a welcome beverage, and offer to hold your luggage while you wait for your room. The staff will also offer several suggestions of things you can do while you wait – a trip into the city isn’t a bad idea.
While the city has a clean, and user-friendly public transport system, you’ll feel much closer to the city and its events if you take the time to stroll.
The Duomo is Italy’s largest cathedral, and the world’s fifth largest. To illustrate – St. Peter’s is a bit larger, yes, but it’s technically at the Vatican, which is not Italy.
Strolling today’s Milan puts ancient buildings next door to upscale and contemporary ones. For instance, to the cathedral’s left is the Galleria which shares the block with an upscale department store. To the right of the Duomo is the Royal Palace, which houses several museums – most of which are dedicated to historic arts, while one is dedicated to 20th century works.
